Jonathan De Maeyer is a visual artist who seeks to understand his surroundings through his photographic work, films, and writings. De Maeyer is building a digital and analog image archive that forms the basis for associative series, aiming to translate the desire for an unknown landscape, ‘Locus Amoenis.’ Additionally, the series explores the interpretation of place. The boundaries of perception seem to be defined by figures of speech and interpretations. In his work, he attempts to reinterpret the landscape and give the viewer access to an alternative, personal perception. A representation of reality is already a perception.
The presentation of an image consists of layers. Some see the space between these layers as emptiness, but De Maeyer prefers to see it as a space with endless possibilities from which the viewer can freely interpret. When images fail to convey a specific meaning, a blank canvas emerges, allowing a projection of personal perception. By adding these layers, he aims to slow down the process of seeing.
What fascinates him is not the image itself, but the image of the image, which is artificial. Does reality exist if it is not observed?
Jonathan De Maeyer holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts — Photography from LUCA School of Arts Ghent and works on both independent projects and collaborations with artists and musicians.
