In ‘Carte Blanche’, an artist is given free play in KUNSTLETTERS, the quarterly magazine of Kunstwerkt. Under the banner of Carte Blanche, BLANCO selects a different artist to fill two blank pages of each edition of the magazine. The artists are selected together with partners from UFO.

Haitam: “I spend much of my time in my studio. That place feels like a teenage bedroom, a space where parents are not allowed. For me, the studio also functions like a sponge that absorbs impressions from the outside world. Filtering is of great importance in the way I work. It helps me shape a personal, sharpened frame of reference and find a place in a world that is not always gentle.
I don’t believe my work provides answers. Rather, it offers a different perspective, as a way of breaking free from the stereotypes surrounding my identity and the roles imposed on me.
In my practice, the conditions in which a work comes into being — such as space and rhythm — are just as important as the material translation I give to it. The images may end up on canvas, paper, or wood, but they do not start there. Painting and drawing are simply instruments for expressing myself.”
